Enhanced or Artificial?

I was watching one of today’s most famous computer scientists and futurists Ray Kurzweil on a YouTube interview yesterday. He was commenting on his dislike of the name Artificial Intelligence / A.I. for today’s latest scientific wonder device. His major complaint was that he believes the word Artificial incorrectly describes what they are by creating a false separation between human intelligence and machine intelligence. Kurzweil is famous for his beliefs about human & machine interactions. He sees a future where humans & thinking machines are increasingly integrated. I don’t know about that he’s probably right, but I do agree with his opinion on the need for a better word or phrase to describe these devices and I think I might just have what the Dr. ordered. Instead of Artificial Intelligence or AI as it is usually called I prefer Enhanced Intelligence or EI instead. The truth is there is nothing Artificial about the type of intelligence we are creating in silicone. It is wholly a creation of the human mind. Like any other human tool it enhances and extends human capabilities. Calling it Artificial belittles the enormous achievement it represents. Calling it Enhanced Intelligence reunites it to us where saying it is Artificial forever makes it the other separate and alien. This creates fear of it & our literature & media is full of this fear. That needs to stop and a new narrative based on a more accurate and positive name can’t hurt.
