Democracy at the Crossroads
Democracy at the Crossroads
I want to be candid about this, increasingly large segments of the so-called
Republican party are no longer supporters of democracy. Stridently anti-democratic factions hold sway from the WH on down into the ranks and base of the party today. They are supported by a deeply anti-democratic segment of the right-wing media. A form of right-wing Populism - Nationalism has married itself to the Corp. wing of the party, add the these folks the right-wing religious factions and white supremacists and what you end up with is a deeply reactionary and fiercely anti-democratic movement looking to replace our present Constitutional order with something that looks more like today's Russian kleptocracy/autocracy with a supreme leader or quasi-Dictator like Putin and a weak fig democracy ( the DUMA.) Sadly, I don't see this getting any better in the years ahead. The party is now reaching for Authoritarian leaders like Trump and Chris Christie among others. Where will this all end? Is the picture above where it's going?
